Over the years, I’ve learned all the tricks of Boolean searching and how to use wildcards. But, occasionally it’s just not enough and I have to admit defeat to that white box.
Why would a good, strong search fail us? Here are a few reasons:
- The record you need hasn’t been properly indexed or hasn’t been indexed yet.
- The website uses OCR (optical character recognition) and the conversion wasn’t completely accurate.
- The document that contains the information you seek was wrongly transcribed
You hear the phrase “there’s no easy button” a lot in genealogy. In this case, the easy button can sometimes be the search button. It’s a great place to start, but don’t forget to drill down to the document itself and do some leg work. It’s worth the effort!
